Fonda Gets a Face Full of Spit

Jane Fonda was apparently showered with more than admiration at a promotional event Tuesday night. According to reports, police say a 54-year-old man was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct after he spit in the face of the Oscar-winning actress.

The 67-year-old star of the upcoming flick 'Monster-In-Law' and author of a new bestselling memoir, My Life So Far, was signing books at the Kansas City event ... when the man allegedly passed her a copy and then spit tobacco juice at her. Fonda has reportedly declined to press charges against him.

The man who spat tobacco juice in Jane Fonda's face on Wednesday claims he's a Vietnam veteran who attacked the actress because she's a "traitor". Michael Smith, 54, waited in line for about 90 minutes before spitting a "large amount" of tobacco juice into Fonda's face, according to Kansas City, Missouri, police. Smith was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct after the attack, which he told police was in response to her controversial 1972 trip to Hanoi.

Smith says Fonda is a "traitor" who has been spitting in the faces of war veterans for years. He adds, "There are a lot of veterans who would love to do what I did."

He stood in line for 90 minutes just to spit on Jane Fonda. Wow. Talk about climbing your way up to mediocrity.

What a dolt.

you are obviously not a veteran, nor do you understand the hate that she engenders

Says: Cheyenne at April 21, 2005 04:35 PM

No, I'm not a veteran. And yes, I get it (you don't need to be a vet to get it). But to spit in her face after she's repeatedly -- REPEATEDLY -- apologized for her actions. Well, that's just a guy who's far too giddy to spit in another person's face for me.

Just because I hate somebody or their actions doesn't give me (or anybody) the right to spit in their face.

Apologize? You mean for being a traitor? For telling the NVA when a POW slipped her a note in a prison camp for which the POW was then severely tortured? You say you're not a vet...I SERIOUSLY doubt that you get it...

Says: Cheyenne at April 21, 2005 07:10 PM

You're not only being condescending, but you're also believing in a story that has been proven time and again to be UNTRUE. www.snopes.com did a very good job of compiling what is true and untrue about Hanoi Jane:

http://www.snopes.com/military/fonda.asp

In part: "In fact, Fonda carried home letters from many American POWs to their families upon her return from North Vietnam, and rumors that a POW was beaten to death when he refused to meet with her were nothing more than rumors."

I'm hardly defending anything she did in 1972. But she has come out time and again -- most recently with the publication of her new book -- and apologized for doing something that was wrong, stupid, and hurtful. I fully understand the anger felt by vets. But that anger doesn't exonerate the spitter's actions. Nor does it make him a hero. If he's proud of himself, whatever. Two wrongs do not make a right.

Before you accuse me of not getting it, please get your facts straight.

Says: Kevvy the Unnamed Source at April 21, 2005 08:40 PM

The facts are that she went to an enemy country in the middle of a war and made traitorous statements to include propaganda recordings for radio. These actions are inexcusable and unpardonable. Apologize? She is profiteering from notoriety gained largely from causing US soldiers on the field of battle undue harm...she can NEVER apologize enough to me.

Says: Cheyenne at April 22, 2005 01:10 AM

Fonda NEVER apoligized for what she did; She apoligized for having her picture taken while she did it. She never admitted that she was wrong. She is a horrible person and deserves to be spit on by every Vietnam vet. They were boys who had NO CHOICE but to fight in that war, and her actions resulted in many of the prisoners of war being tortured. She's a whorebag.
