Why They Called Things Off

When Rebecca Romijn and John Stamos announced their split in April 2004, after five years of marriage, the press seemed shocked, but according to a report in The New York Daily News the relationship had been over for a long time. According to the paper's spywitness, Romijn, her 'Crossing Jordan' boyfriend Jerry O'Connell and 'Oprah' designer Nate Berkus swapped dirt during an intimate lunch this weekend at The Four Seasons Hotel in Los Angeles.

"Did you start dating instantly as soon as your marriage broke up?" Berkus was heard asking Romijn. "Yeah, but we'd actually been separated a year before we told the press about it," Romijn explained. "We were in couples' therapy before and after we separated, and we briefly got back together. But we fought from the very beginning, and we just fought and fought. I just got so sick of John being mad all the time. He was always so mad."

While neither party has ever discussed the real reason for the breakup publicly, the tattler's report apparently irritated the couple's Hollywood flack. Lewis Kay, who reps both Romijn and Stamos, responded to inquiries from the The New York Daily News by saying: "It is unfortunate that your source would eavesdrop on what was obviously a private and personal conversation."

At the lunch, Romijn went on to discuss how she hooked up with her new flame. After meeting five years ago at the Beverly Hills Hotel in an encounter in which she recalls, "He made me laugh," the two didn't become hot and heavy until June 2004 when they met by the pool at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas during the Maxim Hot 100 party. While the buff O'Connell was lounging near her cabana, he jumped into a conversation about making a film "choreographed to the Bellagio fountains," Romijn said. "He wanted to know if he could hold the 'boom' for the movie.Õ He kept saying 'I'm an excellent boomer. Please let me boom for you.'"

According to the conversation, the deal was sealed when O'Connell agreed to Romijn's request that he wear "M.C. Hammer Buttafuoco pants and a cutoff shirt." They've been together ever since.
