Frankly, The Best Quotes

"Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn."

Clark Gable's line to Vivien Leigh in 1939's "Gone With the Wind" led the AFI's list, announced in the organization's annual top-100 special that aired on CBS Tuesday.

Brando had the No. 2 and 3 quotes — "I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse," from "The Godfather" and his "I coulda been a contender" speech from "On the Waterfront."

Judy Garland's Dorothy Gale came in fourth with "Toto, I've got a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore," from The Wizard of Oz." At No. 5 was "Here's looking at you, kid," spoken by Rick (Humphrey Bogart) to Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) in "Casablanca."

Rounding out the top 10:

6. "Go ahead, make my day," Clint Eastwood, "Sudden Impact."

7. "All right, Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close-up," Gloria Swanson, "Sunset Blvd."

8. "May the Force be with you," Harrison Ford, "Star Wars."

9. "Fasten your seatbelts. It's going to be a bumpy night," Bette Davis, "All About Eve."

10. "You talking to me?", Robert De Niro, "Taxi Driver."

--And MP&S must give a special nod to #90: "A martini. Shaken, not stirred" from "Goldfinger."

You Said

All good ones!

I enjoy lists as much as anybody, but I wonder if AFI is clutching at straws at this point.

I didn't watch any of this last night, but I'll be one of my favorite movie lines didn't make it:

"Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?!?! Hell no!!!" John Belushi, Animal House.

:-p

No, but "Toga! Toga!" from the same movie made it.

Says: Lawren at June 22, 2005 10:18 AM

Good enough! :-)

The "Animal House" example above is just one of those where the quote that made the list was far from the best one in the movie.

My choice from the Bond films:

Bond (to Goldfinger): Do you expect me to talk?

Goldfinger (chortling): No, Mr. Bond. I expect you to die!

I have a similar complaint / observation with "The Graduate" - placing the comment "Plastics" 24 spots ahead of "Mrs. Robinson, are you trying to seduce me?" I mean, come on. The latter has been repeated thousands and thousands of times, even by people that weren't born when the movie came out ... how often do you and your friends utter the line "Plastics" to each other? I digress ...

No Caddyshack quotes????

Says: The Seventh Son at June 22, 2005 04:28 PM

I watched the show last night, and I'm pretty sure they did a Caddyshack line ... the dialogue where Murray is ad-libbing when he's about to swing ... maybe they didn't include it since it was a series of remarks ... but they definitely profiled the clip.

Says: Iceman at June 22, 2005 07:26 PM

Caddyshack is #92.

"Cinderella story. Outta nowhere. A former
greenskeeper, now, about to become the
Masters champion. It looks like a mirac...
It's in the hole! It's in the hole! It's
in the hole!"

Says: LDH at June 23, 2005 10:07 AM

It is kinda cheesy, but I loved the Bond line:

"Oh, you're all wet"

"Yes, but my martini is still dry"

I would also have included at least one Big Lebowski line in there, maybe "Nice Marmot" or "that rug really tied the room together"
