Johnny Cash biopic Walk The Line is to be screened at California's Folsom Prison, 38 years after the country star recorded a live album there.

The film, which stars Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon as the late Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash, has been nominated for Golden Globe Awards and is tipped for Oscar glory in February. Prison bosses hope the movie, which follows Cash's career and struggles with drink an drugs, will show prisoners they are not without hope.

Joe Avila, California executive director of the nonprofit Prison Fellowship, tells the Hollywood Reporter, "We invited 20th Century Fox to screen Walk the Line at Folsom because the lesson of Johnny Cash is that it's never too late for a man to turn his life around, and that's a story these men need to hear." Phoenix, who will be at the January 3 screening, adds, "(Cash) believed in the power of redemption and offered his unique gift to anyone who needed to find it within them, and in the process, he inspired millions. I can think of no greater way to honor him than to carry on his legacy of using music to connect to all people."
