NBC's acclaimed White House drama "The West Wing" will conclude its seven-year run in May -- as had long been expected -- after languishing through a steep ratings decline in recent seasons, the network said on Sunday.

In formally announcing plans to bring the series to a close on May 14, NBC Entertainment President Kevin Reilly stressed the show's fate was strictly a matter of TV democracy -- "West Wing" simply failed to draw enough viewers to keep it on the air.

"It's no secret that the ratings have been tough for the last couple of seasons," Reilly said at NBC's semiannual presentation to TV critics. "There's a point where you look at the ratings and you just say, 'it's time."'

I am willing to bet that there is more fallout from W&G being cancelled than the W2, which has supposedly been awful the last few seasons.

W&G, meanwhile, is just beginning to enjoy the effects of widespread syndication, and I predict a failing spin-off (a la "Joey") involving the high pitched voice character, the neighbor Jack, or both to emerge within the next year.
