Who Will Replace Her?

In what was possibly the worst kept secret of the year, Katie Couric is leaving the Today show.

On her 15th anniversary on "Today," Katie Couric told viewers Wednesday she's leaving to join CBS and become the first woman to solely anchor a network evening newscast.

"I wanted to tell all of you out there ... that after listening to my heart and my gut ... I've decided I'll be leaving 'Today' at the end of May," she said. "I really feel as if we've become friends through the years."

The 49-year-old Couric, the longest-serving anchor in "Today" show history, is expected to replace Bob Schieffer on the third-rated CBS broadcast in September. Following a months-long guessing game that has consumed the TV industry, Couric chose the 15th anniversary of her first day as "Today" co-host in 1991 to say that it's time for a change.

"It's been such an honor and a privilege to occupy this seat for as long as I have," she said. "Sometimes I think change is a good thing," Couric said. "Although it may be terrifying to get out of your comfort zone, it's also very exciting to start a new chapter in your life." "It's hard to imagine being here and not having you sitting next to us," co-host Matt Lauer told her.

--I threw up in my mouth a little when she looked at Matt and said, "Like Dorothy said to the Scarecrow, 'I think I'm going to miss you most of all.'"

You Said

Great, the evening news will be even more shallow and touchy-feely than it is now.

Every time I see Katie interview someone I want to gag with the softball pitches she's tossing.

I won't miss her one bit. It can only make the Today show more entertaining. I just wish she'd retire at 49. She's got enough money.

In this day and age, does anyone still watch the evening news?

Says: Hutch at April 5, 2006 03:43 PM

Unfortunately, I watch the CBS evening news and I am NOT looking forward to this change; I think it's a bad idea.

Sorry all you Katie haters, I will miss her on Today. I think that is a perfect spot for her because I sure won't be able to take her serious on the 6:00 news
