Not Enough Time?

A former rock-band manager whose pyrotechnics caused a nightclub fire that killed 100 people was sentenced Wednesday to four years in prison, drawing sobs and groans from victims' relatives who hoped to see the man serve more time behind bars.

Some were so angered by the sentence given to Daniel Biechele — who could have received 10 years — that they stormed out of the courtroom. One man yelled "Typical (expletive) Rhode Island."

"What do you think of your son now?" Patricia Belanger shouted to Biechele's mother. Belanger, who lost her 30-year-old daughter, Dina Ann DeMaio, told reporters afterward: "Now it's her turn to suffer, just like we've been suffering because of her son."

Before sentencing, Biechele gazed downward and choked back tears as he apologized for the Feb. 20, 2003, blaze at The Station nightclub in West Warwick. "I don't know that I'll ever forgive myself for what happened that night, so I can't expect anyone else to," he said, his lip quivering. "I never wanted anyone to be hurt in any way. I never imagined that anyone ever would be."

He was the tour manager for the heavy metal band Great White when he lit a pyrotechnics display that ignited highly flammable foam that lined the walls and ceiling of the nightclub. The foam was used as soundproofing and was placed there by the owners after neighbors complained about noise.

You Said

I am very indifferent on this ... something/someone has to be held accountable, but I just don't know if this man deserves jail time. If he goes to the clink, then the club owner should go as well.

I somewhat agree. I don't think he should be held UNaccountable, however, it was AN ACCIDENT. He was guilty of not obtaining a fire permit & violated the fire code by using non-flame-resistant foam, both misdemeanors. Yes, his accident cost lives but how many of us have never f***ed-up? Most of us have just been fortunate that our mistakes didn't cause people to die. I think massive amounts of community service and "talks" might have been more appropriate and would have been more beneficial to society.

I guess if it were just a normal fuckup that is one thing, but when over 100 people die, its more than just an accident. Its a catastrophe. I think many people are deserving of jail time in this scenario, and hope the ax will fall on some others, including the club owner.

Lord knows, being born & raised Okie/Texan, I am one of the most vindictive people in America, however, the question in regard to Biechele is not was he guilty of manslaughter (that has been determined by the courts) rather, the question concerns appropriate sentencing. Was it likely that this man would ever repeat his mistakes and kill more people? Seriously doubtful. Is society best served by providing him "3 hots and a cot" for the next 4 years as opposed to community service? Hell no.

you're welcome to your opinion and i'm welcome to mine, thanks.
