Elton's Closet

Some 10,000 items of Elton John's wardrobe – coats, sweaters, suits and other garments, including those of his partner, David Furnish – went on sale in New York on Tuesday to raise money for the singer's Elton John AIDS Foundation.

To accommodate the buyers – and gawkers – a temporary shop, Elton's Closet, has been set up in the concourse of Rockefeller Center in midtown Manhattan, reports the Associated Press. The sale runs through Saturday. "The clothes have hardly been worn. Some of them haven't been worn," John, 59, said at a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the shop. Among the items: a black Versace suit decorated with John's song titles (including his signature "Rocket Man") woven into the fabric and a polka-dot Richard James suit John wore when he performed with Eminem at the 2001 Grammys.

While the performance pieces are expected to sell for thousands of dollars, there are also plenty of bargain items, including a $150 Gucci shirt and $30 Nike and Adidas sneakers. Similar sales also have been held in London and Atlanta, where John and Furnish have a home.
